Gregorian Chant is too beautiful not to learn.
In the clarinet world we don’t say “I love you,” we say “You ain’t no Bob Spring” which roughly translates to “Slur two, tongue two,” and I think that’s just beautiful.

It means never give up, and I think that’s beautiful.

I broke three octaves today, so that’s encouraging :)
Mesmerising performance by the great, wonderful Leontyne Price, singing the aria ‘Zweite Brautnacht’ from Strauss’s opera Die Agyptiche Helena.
Such a stunning instrument. Her upper register is absolutely outstanding, despite being clean and glistening in silvery tones, she has complete dramatic resonance and attack over the heavy orchestration without any duress or lack of clarity. The ease in which she glides through such a formidable and intricate vocal line is amazing, even delving in and out of registers immaculately.
Strauss is by far by favourite Germanic Romantic composer. The compositions are so layered, swirling, heroic, insidious and completely drenched in drama which is so essential for any operatic piece.

Anonymous asked: Regarding your post on your new piercing: 1. You're pretty. :) 2. You are right to be concerned about it. Sadly, vocalists are often judged on their appearance almost as much as they are judged on their actual singing. I would definitely take it out during auditions/performances. I knew a girl who was going to get gauges, but aspired to be a classical vocalist. I can't think of doing anything worse to your career than that.
Thanks <3 And also thanks for the advice :D
Update: my voice teacher didn’t yell at me for the nose piercing, so life is looking up. And by up, I mean down, because musicianship was terrible today.
Look at all them opera prints on my wall. So classy.
Normally I don’t post personal things on this blog, but whatever, it happens. I’m a nineteen year old mezzo-soprano studying classical voice, and I just got my nose pierced last night. I’m more than aware that my voice teacher is probably not going to be amused.
But I’m much more concerned that this could affect my future career. I’m aware that plenty of opera singers in this younger generation have tattoos, but piercings? Eek! Would it be best if I just take it out during auditions? Should I try to hide it? I know I’m already probably disadvantaged as a queer, brown, Jewish girl in an industry that is still very white-washed and easier for men. Do you think the nose piercing is going to push it over the edge?
